About Our School

Traditional Montessori Education

Red Barn Montessori is a traditional Montessori preschool and kindergarten for children 3 to 6 years of age. We have a year-round program with a two-week break in December and again in the spring as well as a six-week break in the summer.

Our Beautiful Setting

Based in nature, Red Barn’s program nurtures the child's intellectual, social and emotional development, and promotes mindful respect for the environment. The country setting gives children plenty of time outdoors to play, explore the gardens and actively engage in the natural world around them.

Peace Curriculum & Nonviolence Education

To prepare children for the world outside of the classroom, we take seriously the ideals of peace and nonviolence espoused by Maria Montessori. Peace is much more than a word in our classroom and nonviolence is anything but passive. Both are a practice and a skill--with practical tools and a robust literature to reinforce their value. Drawing from best practices and the latest science about human nature, the causes and effects of violence and general human development, children are trained as peacemakers, which means that they learn and practice the social and emotional skills that allow one to stand up for themselves without diminishing the dignity of others, and how to see their own good in the uplifting of the whole group. When difficulties arise, which they will, we model and teach the art of restorative justice, compassion and understanding instead of punishment, shame and judgment. In a small prepared environment, we experience a microcosm of the world's challenges, and we work together to learn how to make our "world" work for everyone. Maria Montessori was convinced that there is no greater education than true peace education, and we continue her legacy here. Parents and families are invited to join us for this journey.

Experienced Teachers

Montessori-trained teacher Andrée Young and assistant teacher Sharen Schrock, run our program with over 30 years of Montessori teaching experience. Highly skilled and energetic, their exceptional approach to interacting with children is creative, loving, consistent, and positive. They attend to the whole child, incorporating the Montessori philosophy in every aspect of the students' day.

Low Student-to-Teacher Ratio

We offer a low student-to-teacher ratio (a maximum of 1:8) that enables the teachers to provide the presence, guidance and attention each child deserves.

"Red Barn is a love fountain pumping the good stuff into the atmosphere."
Susan Bono, Tiny Lights Magazine
Mother of two Montessori graduates under Andree Young.
